Armenian painter, sculptor, illustrator, translator, art critic, and theater artist. He is considered the founder of Armenian historical painting.
1860- born in Akhaltsikhe (Georgia).
1870 -1875 - studied at the high school of Lazarev Institute in Moscow.
1879 - entered the Academy of Fine Arts of Munich, department of architecture.
1880 - moved to Fine Arts department of Academy of Fine Arts of Munich, class of Friedrich Kaulbach and Otto Seitz.
1881 - visited the monastery of Mechitarists at San Lazzaro, studied Armenian medieval manuscripts.
1901 - personal exhibition in Baku.
1910 - became member of Russian realist artists group "Peredvizhniki".
1916 - one of the founders of Union of Armenian Painters in Tiflis.
1917 - moved to Yalta.
1921 - died in Yalta (Crimea).
